Growing up in the Riverina, Elaine developed a fascination with bones, skeletons and carcasses, and by the ever-present nature of decay in the Australian landscape. This body of work was informed by collecting, cleaning and documenting livestock skeletons and carcasses from across the Riverina, in various stages of decomposition. These objects formed an integral part of a drought affected landscape, and isolating the subject from its natural environment enabled Elaine to develop an intimate engagement with the forms, textures and structures of these forms. Predominately working in black and white, her drawings and prints use materials that are easily broken down such as ink and watercolour washes, expressive mono-print marks, and layers of tone and light. The exploration of chiaroscuro allows her to create mood and character within the works.
